For this twenty-ninth episode, I spoke with Chris Savage, co-founder of Wistia, a leading video platform for marketers and salespeople.

Together, they saw the potential of video and created a competition website for filmmakers. This site then evolved into a video platform that helps businesses work effectively with video.

Chris: Thanks for having me.
Jeroen: You are the co-founder of Wistia. For those who don’t know Wistia yet, which probably isn’t the case for many people, what do you do?
Chris: We’re a company based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and we have a platform that helps people market and sell better through video. Our core product, Wistia, which we launched a long time ago, allows you to monitor and measure the entire video experience on your site, so you can make your videos more effective. So you can make your videos more effective and better understand how they’re impacting your audience.
Chris: We also have a product called Soapbox, which is a Chrome extension that lets you make videos. It’s a really simple thing that lets you record your webcam and your screen simultaneously, and then you can create seamless edits between the two. So you can create professional-looking videos really easily.
Jeroen: Yes. If I understand correctly, what you’re basically doing compared to, say, integrating YouTube into your site, is creating something that’s more suitable for marketers and salespeople, where they can see exactly who watched what and when. What else does it do?
Chris: That’s absolutely correct. We track how each viewer watches each video second by second – what they skip, what they rewatch, so you get a picture of how your audience is responding overall, which can help you make content more effective in the future. We use that data to integrate with other marketing platforms. For example, we integrate with HubSpot . That means you can take your view data and put it into HubSpot , and then you can understand which people in your prospect database are actually watching your videos. So you can create automations and things like that.
